Gospel Reading

Luke 20:19-26 contains Jesus’ decree to “give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” In this response, to a question that was meant to trap Jesus, we have a proclamation about the sovereignty of God. Because the emperor’s image is on the coin, the coin belongs to the emperor. Because we are made in the image of God, we belong to God. While we may have obligations on the earth (e.g. to pay taxes) our ultimate loyalty is to God. This does not mean that there is any part of life which is outside of God’s authority. It means that our commitment to God supersedes our commitment to all other authorities and is the basis on which we evaluate all claims upon our lives.

What things have we put before God? How do we change that?
