The Gospel Reading
The story of the healing of the Gerasene Demoniac is one of the more poignant examples of the world’s reaction to true healing; fear. “Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear.” (NRSV) Were the people afraid of the power that Jesus had? Were they afraid of what might happen to pork prices if he stayed in the area any longer? Or, were they afraid of what it might mean to have their understanding of the world turned upside down? Either way their reaction was to beg Jesus to leave them. Is that what we do when we hear the Gospel begin to intrude upon our world and our lives (except for Sundays, of course)? For those of us who have been healed by Jesus, have we heard his command, “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you”?
